U.S. News & World Report has released its list of the most powerful light-duty pickup trucks in 2021 and found two GMC models worthy of inclusion: the 2021 GMC Canyon and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500.
U.S. News focused on light-duty trucks because the most capable, heavy-duty trucks are “best suited for professional use and tend to be too large and ungainly for most pickup buyers.” For the average customer, finding a powerful light-duty truck should be enough if they intend to haul or tow.
The 2021 GMC Canyon, a midsize truck designed for work and play, took the eighth spot on the list thanks to its standard 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is rated at 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, this affordable truck can tow up to 7,000 pounds.
The GMC Sierra 1500 took spot number three on the list, ahead of trucks like the Toyota Tundra and Chevy Silverado, thanks to its 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine. With 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, the Sierra 1500 is one of the most powerful trucks in the business and can tow up to 11,800 pounds. The available Duramax® Turbo-Diesel, which has just as much torque, also gets 30 miles per gallon,* proving power doesn’t have to compromise efficiency.

Competition among the many pickup truck options available in the United States is more cutthroat than ever, and the tumult of 2020 had a significant impact on many manufacturers. In spite of the losses many competitors suffered, the GMC Sierra experienced growth in 2020 thanks to its high-quality construction and understandably loyal customer base.
According to the Vice President of General Motors, Steve Hill, GM was the only truck manufacturer to experience market share growth during 2020. The growth in market share experienced by General Motors allowed it to overtake its fiercest competitor and claim the crown for being the best-selling truck manufacturer in the US.
The GMC Sierra experienced an 8.91 percent uptick in sales from 2019, increasing its total units sold from 232,323 to 253,016. This massive growth correlated to a 2 percent increase in overall market share from 9 percent in 2019 to 11 percent in 2020. The Sierra’s sales increases are especially impressive given that every non-GM full-size truck sold in the US experienced a sales decline of at least 2 percent, with some manufacturers seeing sales lulls of over 16 percent.
The sales growth of GMC’s flagship truck is a testament to its hearty performance and in-demand productivity features. If you want to see for yourself why the Sierra is more popular than ever, schedule a test drive at Rivard Buick GMC today.
Are you tired of unsightly dents and scratches in your truck bed? Then you might want to think about getting a truck with the industry-first available GMC CarbonPro® truck bed. It’s so tough that GMC tested it against hurricane-force winds.
The GMC CarbonPro® comes standard on all 2019 and 2020 Sierra 1500 Denali CarbonPro® Editions and the Sierra 1500 AT4 CarbonPro® Edition models. Instead of using the standard truck bed model, which consists of steel for the panels and floor, this innovative bed is made from a rugged carbon-fiber composite.
The CarbonPro® was designed to ensure long-term durability in a truck bed that provides best-in-class dent and scratch resistance. In order to ensure its ruggedness and functionality, GMC subjected it to a number of rigorous tests, not the least of which being Category 1 hurricane-force projectiles, one of the strongest forces in nature. After proving to be unphased by things like extreme temperatures, corrosion, and 1,800-pound loads of gravel, the CarbonPro showed that it had no issue taking on hurricane winds either.
Beds made without the carbon-fiber composite did not fare quite as well in the hurricane test, thanks to its higher rebound efficiency. That allows items to bounce right off rather than absorbing the impact.

Pickups are more popular than ever these days, and it’s no wonder why. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, muscular hauling and towing power, confident handling, and conveniently customizable variety are just a few of the many reasons to buy a truck.
Hauling and towing power
If you need to haul a big load or pull a heavy trailer, pickups boast designs with the size, bed space, and ability to get the job done. Whether you’re helping a friend move, tackling a do-it-yourself project around the house, or pulling your boat to the bay for the weekend, a truck is your best bet for effortless transportation.
With their size, ground clearance, and available four-wheel-drive configurations, trucks are uniquely capable of handling adverse conditions and tough terrain. If you’re going off-road, dodging potholes, or driving in a part of the country where it snows, pickups provide the safest, most sure-footed way to travel.
Are you strictly in the market for a rugged workhorse, or are you looking for an all-terrain recreational ride or a luxurious highway cruiser? Whatever your transportation needs are, there’s a truck out there for you. For example, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup offers everything from a worksite-ready base model to the off-roading AT4 to the sophisticated Denali trim. And if you want a differently-sized pickup, check out the midsize Colorado or the massive Sierra HD.
To experience the benefits of buying a truck for yourself, stop by Rivard Buick GMC and take the Canyon, Sierra 1500, or Sierra HD out for a test drive.
The GMC Sierra 1500 was completely redesigned for the 2019 model year. However, it is already getting some equipment changes for 2020. Updates for the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 will include greater availability of powertrain options and more technology.
Late in the 2019 model year, GMC introduced the CarbonPro carbon-fiber bed and the 3.0-liter Duramax® turbodiesel engine. Both of these options will be more available across the lineup. The powerful 5.3-liter V8 engine with Dynamic Fuel Management will come with a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of an eight-speed. The 10-speed transmission will also be offered on the 3.0-liter and 6.2-liter engines.
Buyers will also be able to add the Enhanced ProGrade Trailering system that comes with 15 cameras. These cameras include the innovative “invisible” trailer effect that lets you see what’s coming up behind your trailer. Adaptive cruise control will also be a new option, available on the SLT, AT4, and Denali trim levels and will be able to bring the truck to a complete stop.
GMC will also be expanding its package options. The Elevation trim package will be available on Crew Cab models. Before it was restricted to just Double Cab models. In addition, the AT4 package will come with black exhaust tips and a black chrome grille surround.
