U.S. News & World Report has released its list of the most powerful light-duty pickup trucks in 2021 and found two GMC models worthy of inclusion: the 2021 GMC Canyon and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500.
U.S. News focused on light-duty trucks because the most capable, heavy-duty trucks are “best suited for professional use and tend to be too large and ungainly for most pickup buyers.” For the average customer, finding a powerful light-duty truck should be enough if they intend to haul or tow.
The 2021 GMC Canyon, a midsize truck designed for work and play, took the eighth spot on the list thanks to its standard 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is rated at 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, this affordable truck can tow up to 7,000 pounds.
The GMC Sierra 1500 took spot number three on the list, ahead of trucks like the Toyota Tundra and Chevy Silverado, thanks to its 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine. With 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, the Sierra 1500 is one of the most powerful trucks in the business and can tow up to 11,800 pounds. The available Duramax® Turbo-Diesel, which has just as much torque, also gets 30 miles per gallon,* proving power doesn’t have to compromise efficiency.

The GMC Sierra 1500 was just completely redesigned for the 2019 model year. However, it is set to receive a number of exciting improvements in 2021, most significantly in the interior. The 2021 GMC Sierra’s cabin will feel more luxurious than ever before with upscale appointments and advanced technology.
Some automotive writers felt that the 2019 Sierra’s interior didn’t quite match the sophistication of the rest of the vehicle. GMC is responding to that feedback with action; promising an interior as advanced and capable as the Sierra itself.
According to some reports, the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 will come with a completely redesigned center console that will feature a larger touchscreen and a more sophisticated design.
General Motors has yet to confirm what specific updates will make an appearance in the Sierra. We hope to see features like additional storage compartments, an available panoramic sunroof, and more connectivity features like Amazon Alexa compatibility.
With the addition of updated interior features, we think the GMC Sierra 1500 will once again raise the bar for what can be expected in a pickup truck. It currently offers class-leading cargo volume, six impressive powertrain options, the segment-exclusive available MultiPro tailgate, and the always formidable Denali model. With a more modern interior, you won’t want to drive anything else.
If you’re as excited as we are to see what GMC has up their sleeve for the refreshed 2021 GMC Sierra 1500, then we can’t wait to see you here at Rivard Buick GMC when it finally makes its way out into the wild.
Finally, a test drive that’s more about the vehicle’s features and less about obeying traffic laws. That is what GMC is offering with their 2015 GMC Canyon pickup truck. In an interactive offering called Canyon Experience, computer users can put the truck though its paces. First, they can pinpoint their home location and through an interface with Google Maps, then users can then “see” a GMC Canyon in their home neighborhood.
From the comfort of the operator’s home, he or she can custom road-test the Canyon in every possible weather and terrain condition while the engineering behind the truck’s design is outlined on the screen.
“The Canyon Experience will appeal to the variety of lifestyles and interests of our very diverse audience,” said Kenn Bakowski, Canyon marketing manager, in a statement. “Customers can learn about the various Canyon attributes that interest them, including capability, safety, the quiet cabin, connectivity and more.”
Customers can use the GMC Canyon virtual test drive features to configure the truck’s cabin and bed to best suit their own needs, while also “loading” it up with various cargo to see the diverse hauling capabilities of the 2015 GMC Canyon. If you’d like to go beyond the virtual, and take an actual reality test-drive of a Canyon, come into Rivard Buick GMC, today.
